Mitiaro about 30 miles to the north and east of Atiu is surrounded by rugged limestone cliffs. There is just one main settlement on the west coast of the island. There are a few small inland caves around the makatea and a large area of swamp with two connecting lakes in the interior. The island is not as fertile as its neighbours and consequently, being poorer, there are more traditional thatch fales on the island. There are several interesting marae, ancient stone foundations marking religious meeting places and a limestone cave with a lovely natural swimming pool. The Sea Breeze Lodge provides clean and basic accommodation with shared facilities.
Mauke lies another 30 miles to the south and east of Mitiaro. It is very similar to Atiu but smaller. Motuanga Cave has a lovely natural swimming pool. Accommodation is provided by Tiare Holiday Village on the south side of Mauke.
Local Travel Operators
Mitiaro and Mauke lie to the north east of Rarotonga, about 40 minutes by plane. Air Rarotonga offers two flights per week to the islands. The alternative to flying is to travel by inter island cargo boat which provides a romantic vision of sailing the high seas. Cargo boats depart from Avarua on Rarotonga about once a month to visit Atiu, Mauke and Mitiaro for about $150 round trip. The trip takes about 5 days and stops at each island for about half a day so you can have a quick look around. Alternatively you can stop off at any of these islands and take a flight back. Cabins can be booked in advance. It is worth bringing a few basic provisions with you from Rarotonga.
