Sailing in the Cook Islands

The only place on Rarotonga where you can sail within the lagoon is at Muri. Small catamarans can be rented from the Pacific Resort activities centre. There are two sailing charters which operate day sailing trips around the island of Rarotonga.
There are no sailing charters around the islands. Your best bet to see the islands on a yacht is to ask one of the visiting yachties at Avarua Harbour on Rarotonga if they need crew.
For those sailing to the Cook Islands, there are four ports of entry. The main entry is at Avarua harbour on the north coast of Rarotonga - fly your Q flag on arrival and a customs rep will meet come aboard. Other official ports of entry are Aitutaki, 140 miles to the north of Rarotonga, and Penryn and Pukapuka over 700 miles from Rarotonga in the far north of the group. Clearance is obtained through government administration offices on these islands. Best sailing is between May and October outside the tropical rainy season when cyclones may be present.
